New Instagram drama merges theatre and technology

Our Hull Youth Theatre has been working on a unique drama broadcast live on Instagram in episodes during April.

The National Youth Arts Trust youth theatre in Hull has been working on a unique drama production which merges theatre and technology by being broadcast live on Instagram over a series of episodes in April.

Our teen soap opera is about students at a fictional school that has cut performing arts lessons from the curriculum. Each episode focuses on how the students respond to the news, and their campaign to change the school’s decision and stand up for their education in the arts.

“Devising and writing our scripts has been so fun, yet also challenging at the same time, as we had to put our creative thinking to the test. It’s been fun to be able to perform the production’s message through daily events in the lives of teenage fictional characters. It’s so strange to think that we will broadcast this on social media. It feels as though it’s real on TV, like one of EastEnders’ live episodes which is why this project has been so enjoyable.”

The youth theatre has created Instagram profiles for the characters, and audience members are invited to interact with each episode live. This is a unique opportunity for the students to explore ways of using social media to reach and engage with different audiences and to find creative ways of telling an important narrative and have their voice heard.

The five episodes will be broadcast live every afternoon from 16 – 20 April, at 4.30 pm.
